This story is actually a continuation of King Midas and the Gold. King Midas and King who has donkey ears are the same king. I read the story recently but I didn't know that.
King Midas was asked to judge a competition between a musician and the god Apollo. King Midas declared the musician the winner - and even said he was the better player. Apollo was so angry, he gave King Midas donkey's ears.
The King Midas was modeled on King Midas who really existed in the 10th B.C. That is so interesting. I didn't get what was a lesson from King Donkey Ears but I learned it as I knew these two stories were closely related. I think they told us to be always generosity to everybody. If we forgave for someone who made a mistake or something, we could feel comfortable.
