I watched a DVD, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, at a class. This is my report.
The relationship between Huck and Jim
Huck and Jim are compared. Huck is a white boy who is in the owner of slave side. Jim is an adult and he is a African American who is considered slaves. The relationship between Huck and Jim is on a subtle balance.
First, the relationship between Huck and Jim is equal friendship. You can find that by the scene Jim confessed that father of Huck had died. Judging from what Huck said, “I thought we were friends”, they became the best friends on their escape way. They built a equal relationship. If they were not in an equal relationship, Huck would not have felt that he had been cheated by Jim.
Huck is an unfettered person, so he could be a friend with Jim. He considered himself to be a bad-mannered, and he feels Mrs. Watson’s discipline, studying, formal clothes and manners are boring. Most of the then whites used to think they are sophisticated. Because Huck deviated from the white society, he could get along with Jim.
However, the relationship between Huck and Jim sometimes become the relationship of “a white and an African American”. Jim wasn’t cultured. On the way they moved downstream of Mississippi River, Huck showed his knowledge to Jim. Jim asked Huck to read the arrest instruction. Also, Huck has tried abandoning Jim once. These scenes show you the difference between the then whites and African American.
These two relationships, “equal friendship” and “white and African American”, keep their balance and also make this movie get depth.
